The O.C. in Me

I hate to admit it but there are times that I just can't help but feel O.C. (obsessive compulsive) about certain things. We all have our quirky side and this is one them..

A good example of this is when I need to study for an exam. Before I bring out my books, markers, pens and whatever is needed for my study session, I would have to make sure that the room I'm in is mess-free. Otherwise, my eyes would get distracted and I would have a hard time concentrating on my studies. The O.C. in me also kicks in whenever I'm in the supermarket. I get a bit annoyed when I see certain things that aren't in their right shelves. Like when I see a bottle of shampoo placed on the shelves together with acne cures or when someone "inadvertently" leaves a bag of chips on the shelves of laundry detergent. It makes me feel restless to the point that I would pick up the bag of chips and put it in my cart so when I pass by the chips aisle, I can bring it to it's proper shelf. Haha! Sometimes I try to ignore it but in the end I tell one of the staff that one of their items was misplaced.

I know I'm not the only that acts this way. Come on now, I know you're out there. Care to share your quirky side?

Numbers

I have a confession to make. A few of you may know about this and for sure most of my friends know this fact about me. I am not good with numbers. I hate math, always have and (I think) always will. Actually, it's the problem solving or the analysis is what makes me all confused. I would rather memorize all the terms and formulas but never ask me to analyze and solve a math problem. Even the simplest problems would leave me staring blankly as long as they require analytical thinking. LOL! I remember accompanying my friend as she discussed with her agent their term life insurance quotes. The whole time they were discussing the computation for her insurance and I was just nodding in unison with my friend. As if I understood what the agent was talking about.

So there, now you know one of my secrets. *sshh*

Becky Bloomwood in Real Life

I was watching something on cable last night and I almost jumped off my seat when I saw a teaser of the movie Confessions of a Shopaholic. I've looked for links that would give more info about this movie and the dates that I saw when they were posted were from late last year. Sheesh! Where have I been? It's a good thing though that it will be shown some time next year. I'm really excited about this movie.

Read more about this in my other blog.

VEV and EDD's Weight Loss Program

When I was a kid up until I graduated from college, I have always been on the slim side of the spectrum. I ALWAYS fit in free sized tops and dresses. Medium and large is not part of my wardrobe vocabulary. The only problem that I usual have was buying pants because my hips are normally big so it's hard to find the perfect pair of pants.

I started working for the embassy in 2001. Slowly, I noticed that my body was changing. I've been gaining a few pounds here and there but whenever that happens, I see to it that I go on a crash diet and go crazy doing crunches and yoga. After being employed there for six years, I have gained a total of 15 lbs. But that's just half the story. When I resigned and started going back to school, I noticed (yet again!) that I've been gaining weight. My clothes don't fit anymore and even my favorite ring that I've had since high school seems to feel a bit tighter on my finger. WAA!! And it dawned on me. Having no exercise and control on what I eat, plus reaching the big 3-0 all contributed to my "condition" right now. I am getting somewhat depressed and a bit frustrated because I can't seem to shed off these excess "baggage" that I have in a couple of weeks time. Before, it was easy. I just eat cereals for breakfast; salad and chicken or fish for lunch and soup or salad for dinner for a week or two and it's bye-bye 5 lbs. *sigh*

That's why my friend Em and I came up with a challenge. That is to regain our Pre-embassy weight before September. So that means, I would have to lose a total of 15-20 lbs. Pressure!! LOL! This is how I should look come September.

This is me and Em when we were still in our "slim days". I'm the one in yellow. The dog's name is Sugar (FYI, she's raft3r's dog).

This is me in 2006. This time I have long hair and I'm the one in the sky blue top. Ick! My top matches the color of the bench. LOL!

So for me to look like myself in the above photos, I would have to strictly follow ...
The Weight Loss Program that Em and I share:

I. EXERCISE: A minimum of 30 minutes/day (only during busy days) and a maximum of 1.5 hours/day. This would include cardio and muscle toning targeting problem areas. My problem areas include: my thighs, tummy and arms. Sheesh!

OPTION 1: oatmeal (plain, with milk or sliced fruits), a cup of coffee, tea or orange juice.
OPTION 2: 2 slices of toast with light butter, jam or cheese, a cup of coffee, tea or orange juice.
OPTION 3: --->can only be eaten 2-3 times a week: egg (unsalted but can use spices/garnish), 2 slices of plain toast, a cup of coffee, tea or orange juice.

LUNCH: (11:30-12:30 nn)
1/3 cup of rice and 1 viand (preferably not fried)
soup or stew with a slice of bread

WATER WATER WATER!

DINNER: (7:00-8:00 pm)
Salad (oil and vinegar-based dressing ONLY!)

Song of the Week # 20

WOW! It seems like yesterday when I posted my first ever song of the week. Now I'm on my 20th. Wee! I hope my blogging buddies and lurkers enjoy listening to the music that I play here. Hehe!

Anyway, this week's Song of the Week is one of our (Aris and I) favorite song at the moment. It's from Coldplay's latest album and it's entitled Viva La Vida. I just couldn't help but stomp my feet and "lightly" bang my head at the intro of the song.

I hope you guys like it. Happy Monday everyone!

Feeling Low

I have a confession to make: I was unable to do most of the tags given to me last month. Obvious ba?! LOL. I got caught up with a lot of things like school and errands but there was one more thing that made me "unbloggy" (if ever there is such a word -- highly doubt it!) except of course for my ka-datung-an entries (LOL).

I was unbloggy because I was feeling under the weather. I wasn't really sick but it surely felt like it. Whoever said that "misery needs company" was mistaken. I was miserable but I didn't need company. I wanted to be alone. I wanted to be alone with thoughts, if ever there were any. Actually there were a lot of things to think about, they were so many that my brain felt numb.

I really didn't think that missing my parents would be this bad. I miss them terribly. It's sad going home to an empty place. I know I'll get used to it but I'm giving myself more time to adjust. There's really no use in speeding things up. It's a good thing I'll be seeing them in December but I'm guessing it'll be harder to leave then. This is probably what they mean about growing up. It sucks! Hehe!

So going back to the tags, my apologies to my blogging buddies. I promise I'll do the new ones (if ever you'll still tag me..hehe).

Song of the Week #19

I know I'm a day delayed for posting the song of week so my apologies (Naks feeling! LOL). This week is from one of my favorite local bands of all time, the Eraserheads. I've been a fan since high school and had a crush on Ely Buendia for the longest time. Hehehe!

I've made their song Sembreak as the song of the week because I just cannot wait to watch their Reunion Concert on the 30th of next month. Yup, you heard me, they're having a concert, unfortunately, it is only for one night. All four of them (Ely, Raimund, Buddy and Marcus) will be performing at the CCP grounds along Roxas Boulevard. The concert is FREE... BUT(!) there is a catch. People will have to sign up on a website to "win" tickets. I have no idea yet on the website but will keep you guys posted.

Aris and I are both EHeads fanatics and wouldn't miss this for the world. Weee!!! We heart Eraserheads!

Diaper Attack

I went out last night with Aris to have dinner at a nearby restaurant. The food was great and the service was quick. We had a great dinner and it was perfect... well, almost.

As Aris was paying the bill, I decided to go to the little girl's room. While I was walking towards the direction of the rest room, I saw a woman that was walking away from the rest room was somewhat running and catching her breath at the same time. I didn't mind her and proceeded anyway. As I opened the door, an indescribable stench slapped me on the face. I was unprepared for that and didn't know if I should cover my nose first or cover my mouth because I was about to hurl. The one responsible for that foul odor were disposable diapers inside the trash bin at the corner of the room. I don't know if there was a children's party that evening or the cleaning staff forgot to throw out the garbage but it was filled with diapers.

I was really irritated because that is not how I wanted my evening to end. It was lucky for the manager that the girl that I saw running from the toilet approached her and "calmly" told her about the diapers. If it were me, I would've probably done a different approach.

Moral of the story, if you see someone running away from something, run away too or at least try to be cautious. Hehe!

Just when you thought...

... that your house has survived a strong typhoon, think again. My neighbor was really shocked to see everything in tact after the super typhoon Frank hit the metro last month. There were no shattered glass and no water dripping from the ceiling. It was a miracle because the last time there was a typhoon, he said that they have like a small waterfalls inside the house. So anyway, this morning, my neighbor was in disbelief to see their exterior shutters lying on the ground after typhoon Helen passed by the country. Helen was a bit weak. She only brought rain and a very weak breeze. That is why my neighbor was so puzzled as to why the shutters were broken. Hmmm... quite a mystery actually. I too am wondering how it happened.

Welcome BC!

This is a super delayed entry. A month delayed to be exact.

Last 18 June 2008, my brother's second son, Byron Chaz was born. He is the second grandchild of my parents. We have a small family. My other nephew, Aidan (Byron's kuya) is also a June celebrant. Tatlo na kaming Gemini sa pamilya! Lagot! Hahahaha!

So anyway, I'd like to share these photos that I got from my sis-in-law's blog. Teehee! I just want to nibble those chubby cheeks! Welcome to the world Baby B.C. I'll see you in December. Weee!

Oh and happy 1st monthsary baby Byron! :-)

According to Statistics

It was a miracle I was able to get up early this morning after staying up late last night. I was hooked on the tube watching a documentary about obese women. In our country alone, they said that the number of overweight women has increased significantly. It's really not hard to understand why this is happening. If you would only look around, I am sure that there is only a small radius between a fast-food chain or a restaurant from one another. This does not help the fact that we love to eat. Everybody does. It is just that in our culture, we are not used to eating lunch and dinner (and sometimes even in breakfast) if there's no rice. And to add, exercise is also not that popular especially those people who are busy with work and family. Going to the gym is just a fad for some people. Some are just in it because it's the in thing or because it's summer time (need to look good in a bikini or trunks) that's why they head to the gym. This is probably why there are now a lot of diet pills like Anoretix, Xenical and fat burners like Miracleburn out in the market.

It is our lifestyle and eating habits that should change and not the kind of diet pills to take. I just hope that next year, these statistics would give better results.

I Still know my Alphabet

They said there's a new typhoon in town. Well, actually she's here for almost two days now I think. The typhoon's name is Helen right? Question, if I'm not mistaken the last typhoon was named Frank and I'm not that old to forget about my ABC's to notice that what comes after "F" is not "H" but is "G" right? So I'm confused. Is it because the typhoon for letter "G" was so weak that they didn't announce it anymore (LOL!) or this is some kind of rule by the PAGASA? Can anyone answer this. It's really not a big deal but I'm just curious. Heee! :)

Miss Egypt

Since I still have the Miss Universe fever, I thought of sharing these pictures when we had our Miss Universe -themed Christmas party. I was Miss Egypt back then. I chose Egypt because I knew that the costume would be something that cannot be found in my closet. Meaning, it would be unique. So as I go about the process of surfing the web for possible costume designs, I was unaware that I would be representing my unit in the office. Little did I know that I would be one of the contestants in the party's program.

So anyway, my costume was color gold with a matching belt and a headpiece that I made. I was so into the role that I even watched The Mummy twice so I'd know how they speak in preparation for the Q&A. LOL! As if! I was planning on using an interpreter so it would be funnier. It turns out, most of the contestants used an interpreter too because they didn't want to answer in english because obviously our officers wouldn't be able to understand us if we spoke in Filipino. Hahaha! Lahat kami takot dumugo ang ilong!

The only thing that I wasn't or rather all of us weren't prepared for was the "talent portion" of the program. We were told that there wouldn't be any so that we would not be able to prepare for it. They wanted it to be spontaneous. Duh! And to think I was part of the Christmas party committee. Daya! I mean come on, wala naman non sa Miss Universe noh! Ano yun Little Miss Philippines? LOL! So each of us had to do something. I had no choice but to dance to the tune of Beyonce's Baby Boy. Bwahahahaha! I won 1st runner-up though. It was probably because of the Q&A when they were LOL because I'm sure it wasn't because of my dancing. Teehee!

Presenting Miss Egypt!

This was our group picture after announcing the winners. The one crowned Miss Universe is the girl at the middle with the huge headdress.

Kulay ng Kyutix

Your Nail Polish Color is Black

How you're unique: There's nothing about you that isn't unique

Why your style rocks: You are a total indie chick... and you can pull it off

What this color says about you: "I'm a trendsetter and don't care what anyone else is doing!"

Perfect! I always wear black or something dark on my nails. Galing!

Song of the Week #18

I keep forgetting to put this us as my Song of the Week. My memory always escapes me whenever I'm in front of the computer to change the song of the week. It's a good thing I saw something on the internet that reminded me of the 90's. And yes, Everyday People by Arrested Development is one of my favorite songs (this and Regulate by Warren G) when I was in high school. I love all sorts of genre in the 90's. It was at that time that I wanted to be in a band. I tried playing the guitar and the keyboard but my short, stubborn fingers just wouldn't cooperate.

So anyway, I hope this brings you back to that time too. Happy Monday everyone! :)

Jollibee's Lolo?

I really can't remember what I was looking for in Google when I came across this picture. I was just amused when I saw it. Maybe you know why...

According to Wikipedia, this is from a 1963 poster featuring CDC’s national symbol of public health, the "Wellbee", who was depicted here encouraging the public to receive an oral polio vaccine.

Is this where Jollibee corporation got the idea for their mascot or is it just sheer coincidence?

Miss Universe 2008

Since I can remember, I've been watching the Miss Universe pageant every year. It is only when I started working that I stopped because I couldn't watch its live telecast. I could watch it on its replay in the evening but by that time I already know who won (and it's not by choice!) so the excitement and eagerness to watch has escaped me.

So anyway, I'm really excited to watch it tomorrow. I've visited the official website and I was really impressed with all the candidates. They all looked puuurty. Besides rooting for our very own Jennifer Barrientos, I also have a few favorites based on their photos in the official website: For Africa and the Middle East: Miss South Africa; South America: Miss Colombia; Asia & Pacific: Miss Kazakhstan; and Eastern Europe: Miss Albania.

Let's all cross our fingers and hope that Miss Philippines wins!!! :)

Moral of the Story

Patience is a virtue so they say. I am a true believer of this even though at times my EQ is low and that being patient entails a lot of energy in my part. This concept however is important to me when it comes to shopping. I prefer to take my time so I could look at all the merchandise. That's why when my cousin bought a new TV, he was so disappointed because he could have gotten better electronic deals if only he checked other sites on the internet. Well, he learned his lesson not to grab the first "sale" sign that he sees or not to go browsing after buying the merchandise.

From a Farmer to a Princess

It's fun being a kid. You get to play and pretend to be a doctor, a fireman, a police, etc. Now that I'm a grown up, I still get to play pretend but only during parties - costume parties. I love these kind of parties. I once was a heroine in a famous novel, a farmer, a contestant in a beauty pageant and a Bollywood princess. There are a few others that I can recall but what I remember are my costumes. One of my favorites is this African-inspired costume with ostrich feathers on my headpiece. There's also this one party where we all looked like Punky Brewster! That was a fun party. I can't wait to attend another one of these parties. Or maybe I should organize one. Hmmm....

Colorful Life (Makulay ang Buhay) ... LOL!

Before reading this entry, I want you to watch this video.

Nice of these kids to just pop those ampalaya or bitter gourd in their mouth. I am not like them when I was a kid. Since I can remember, I was never really a fan of veggies. I've always wormed my way out of a situation where it entails eating green, leafy, bitter vegetables. I don't even know (and haven't seen) half of the vegetables mentioned in our folksong Bahay Kubo. I just can't bring myself to put it in my mouth, chew it and pretend that it tastes good. I kept telling myself, "I am not a 'horse'." Why would they force me to eat them? There must be something else that tastes less revolting. Apparently there are only a couple of veggies to choose from. Now as I am older, I am more adventurous and let's just say I'm more willing to give those leafy things a second chance.

Surprisingly and with the expertise of Aris's mom when it comes to cooking veggies, little by little I am now eating these once despised leaves, stalks and sprouts. My mom and dad would be proud! :) But don't applaud yet as I have one goal before I can truly say that I am not a veggie eater. And that is if I am willing and able to eat my three archenemies:

Baby steps is the key I guess. You really can't expect me to be a vegetarian in just a couple of days right? :) And once I find the perfect recipe that would bring out the "yummy potential" of these three, then it would be stubborn of me not to try it.

What about you? Is there anything that's not found in the freezer and dairy section in the market that you do not or CANNOT eat?

Ready for Duty

I really can't help but get anxious sometimes whenever we have our hospital duty. As a nursing student, they have high expectations whenever we are on duty. We are expected to know about the different procedures and of course the medical devices in the area of the hospital where we are assigned to.

On our last hospital duty, it was my first time to see a dialysis machine and I was really able to appreciate how the machine works. If I didn't read about it, for sure I'd just be staring blankly on the nurse staff discussing the different parts and functions of the machine. What I am looking forward too is to be assigned in the O.R. I'm sure they have lots of really cool equipment there.

First Meal: Home Alone

Since we're in the topic of being independent, I would just like to post this picture I took of my first meal (brunch to be exact!) that I made as an "independent woman". I really don't know how to cook those "lutong bahay" meals. But I do know how to cook pasta and make one of my favorite breakfast, a ham, cheese and garlic omelette. So this is what I made that day. It's one of my comfort food. The number of diced cheese depends on my mood. The worse my mood is, the more cheese I put. LOL! I also had some crackers and for dessert, sliced peaches.

I want to learn how to cook sinigang, nilaga, adowbow (LOL) and kare-kare. If ever I get the chance to do it, I'd keep you guys posted.

Independent Woman

Sooner or later we all have to grow up. Being independent has its perks but it also has its downside. It feels good to do things that makes you realize that you're now a grown up. Gone are the days when everything you need to do entails asking permission from your parents. No more sneaking around (if it applies) and no more worrying. On the other hand though, the responsibilities that comes with growing up is somehow hard to manage if you're not careful. Bills may pile up, the house might get dirty as a cave or worse you run out of clean clothes.

I am still adjusting to this kind of lifestyle and as each day passes by, I am getting the hang of it. Just the other day, I made a list of things to do like doing the groceries, getting an auto insurance quote and bringing Sundae to the vet. I was able to do all of these yesterday. Quite an accomplishment actually because before all I had to was to get the car cleaned and I was unable to do it. Instead, I spent the day surfing and just being a couch potato. At least now I know how to budget my time and just follow through with my plan. After that, I can do whatever I want. It really is fun to be an adult!
0

Does she have ADHD?

Sundae was really acting up yesterday. She was like running like crazy. I don't know if she just knows that I'm leaving her again for a couple of days again or she just wanted to wreck the whole place. LOL! She was bumping on cabinets and even tripped on the HDMI cable. I thought my computer would fall. Even after she tripped, she just stopped looked at me and started running again. She's one hyper dog! I should probably send her to obedience school. Who knows what else would she break.

Right at your Doorstep

I really wish there would be diet meal delivery services here. I'm sure if there are any, then it will really help me lose the excess weight that I have gained for the past three years. Having someone delivery your meal, complete with dessert is something that a busy person like me would really appreciate. It not only saves time but it also saves energy when it comes to preparing these meals.

I was surprised to find out that there is even a Biggest Loser Meal Plan. These like any other meal delivery service, they can be ordered online or over the phone. Another one is the Nutrisystem where they even have a set meal for diabetics and all-vegetarian meals. There's also Medifast that consists of shakes, soups and pudding. They all sound like normal food when in fact they are healthier and would really help to lose weight. However, no matter how good these diets are, and if they are being prepared by "experts", if we cannot stick to it and do proper exercise, then it will all go to waste.

Song of the Week #17

It's Monday once again and I'm here to give the Song of the Week. This week I am playing one of my favorite songs (Aris's too!). It's from Sade entitled By Your Side. I think it's one of the sweetest songs ever!!! I love every part of it: melody, beat and the lyrics.

Big Eyed Gal is feeling mushy today so deal with it. LOL! Enjoy the song everyone. Happy Monday!

By Your Side
Sade

You think I'd leave your side baby?
You know me better than that
You think I'd leave you down when you're down on your knees?
I wouldn't do that

I'll do you right when your wrong
I-----ohhh, ohhh

If only you could see into me

oh, when you're cold
I'll be there to hold you tight to me
When you're on the outside baby and you can't get in
I will show you, you're so much better than you know
When you're lost, when you're alone and you can't get back again
I will find you darling I'll bring you home

If you want to cry
I am here to dry your eyes
and in no time you'll be fine

You think I'd leave your side baby
You know me better than that
You think I'd leave you down when you're down on your kness
I wouldn't do that

I'll do you right when your wrong
I-----I, ohhhh, ohhh

If only you could see into me

Oh when your cold
I'll be there
To hold you tight to me
Oh when you're alone
I'll be there by your side baby

I think I CAN.

It's easy to say that losing weight is just a matter of discipline. What other people don't know is that discipline should also be paired with determination and knowledge in order for your weight loss program to be successful and safe as well.

I've said this a thousand times already and I'll say it again. I need to lose weight! I'm sometimes feeling desperate and would really like to buy a couple of diet pills just to start the ball rolling so to speak. On the other hand, that would be me taking the easy way out. I have nothing against diet pills. I've tried them before but I would prefer my weight loss to be all natural this time.

I have five months to do it. I know I can.

My friend is going crazy. She desperately needs a maid to help her with the chores especially the cleaning and tidying part of the house. Her husband is not helping. Sure she could excuse her kid messing up the place but when an adult is also a contributory factor in the chaotic scene in their household, then it needs some kind of intervention. I thought she was just exaggerating when she was telling me how messy her house is but when I came there for a surprise visit, I couldn't agree more. I almost broke a bone when I tripped on his husband's golf clubs. Imagine, they were lying on the floor of their bedroom. It was an accident waiting to happen. The room looked like an obstacle course. I sure hope she finds good help soon.

The O.C.

Sheesh!

A Strong Cup of Coffee For My Friends

It's been a while since I've received an award for this blog. :-) Or maybe I just didn't notice the others (naks!). Anyway, thanks Vien!

Help Wanted!
